A TIME capsule filled with memorabilia will be part of a new military memorial being unveiled in Paignton later this month.

The capsule will be cemented into a new structure to mark the memory of soldiers from the Parachute Regiment and Airborne Forces.

Among the local soldiers remembered will be Colonel H Jones from Kingswear, who won the Victoria Cross, and died leading an attack on Argentinian forces at Goose Green during the Falklands War.

Standard bearers and musicians will lead a parade of members of the Parachute Regiment Association from the Esplanade at Paignton to the site of the new memorial at the bottom of Torbay Road at 11.30am on March 28.

Branch secretary Barrie Riley said: "This will be the culmination of two years' planning.

"The regiment was formed 70 years ago when the then Prime Minister, Winston Churchill, ordered the formation of 'a force of 5,000 airborne soldiers'.

"The branch has raised the money to build this memorial to their fallen comrades, and after much trial and tribulation the members are about to see their efforts come to fruition."

Local builders and stonemasons have created the memorial, which will be unveiled by four branch members who fought in all the regiment's major battles of the Second World War — D-Day, Arnhem and the Rhine Crossing.
