Paignton library to host over-50s event
With the United Nations this week calling on governments to address the needs of older people, Torbay Council’s Library Service are hosting a free BIG Lottery funded event at Paignton Library and Information Centre on Tuesday 23 October which aims to do just that.
The 50 PLUS event at the Lottery funded community library will bring together a broad range of statutory, charitable and private partners to offer practical information and advice for everyone in Torbay who is 50 or over to help them live their lives to the full.
Whether it’s tax or pensions advice, hints on how to keep fit in later years, or help for people with stroke, sight or hearing difficulties, representatives from agencies across Torbay will be on hand to offer individual advice and guidance.
There will also be a series of demonstrations and presentations on a range of topics as well as drop-in IT sessions for anyone wanting an introduction to how the internet can help in everyday life.

As a seaside resort, Torbay is an attractive destination for older people. Torbay Libraries believe they are an invaluable resource and are hoping the 50 PLUS day will be able to attract many people to find out what they have to offer, as well as introducing them to a variety of other sources of advice and support they might not have been aware of.
Executive Lead for Culture and the Arts, Cllr Dave Butt, said: "We are always looking for new and innovative ways of providing information and advice to people across the Bay. We know that Torbay has a large proportion of older people and the UN have recently reported a similar trend worldwide so we wanted to put together an event, specifically aimed at the over 50s that provides all the information they need under one roof.
"Libraries across the Bay provide a vital service for our local residents, including our older population, and we hope that the event will not only attract new members but those attending will obtain new information that will be of benefit to them."
The 50 PLUS day runs from 12 pm to 5pm on Tuesday 23 October and is entirely free. All those attending the event will be able to enter a prize draw to win a KOBO e-reader with which they can download free e-book and e-audio book loans from the Torbay Libraries online library of over 1000 electronic titles. The Friends of Paignton Library will be on hand to offer a warm welcome and free refreshments throughout the day.
