Paignton road crossing consultation
TORBAY Council is seeking comments over plans to upgrade a pedestrian crossing in Dartmouth Road, Paignton.
The move follows a petition, backed by the RNIB, requesting the changing of a zebra crossing to a signal-controlled puffin crossing.
This would include facilities to aid people with visual impairments when crossing the road.
The council's Transport Working Party considered the petition in May, when members asked for a revised and upgraded crossing to be designed.

Now, local residents and businesses have received a letter explaining the proposals and inviting comments.
The letter states that due to the proximity of the garage entrance and the junction of Knapp Park Road, the existing location is unsuitable under current Department for Transport guidelines, so a new location outside the Waterside pub has been identified.
The proposed layout

Cllr Robert Excell, Executive Lead for Safer Communities and Transport, said: "While we have written to local residents and businesses, we are also very keen to hear from anyone else regarding the proposed scheme."
Comments should be sent before Friday 12 October to Highways, Roebuck House, Abbey Road, Torquay, TQ2 5TF or via email at highways@torbay.gov.uk.

“Total waste of money. People cross this road anywhere but on the crossing, it is a wonder more people are not killed in this area or badly injured. I think it is only because most motorist slow their speed here, just in case, someone runs over the road, anywhere between the waterside pub & the co- op. I saw an old man laying in the road a couple of week ago, approx 20` from the crossing, but hope he made a quick recovery.”
