Palm tree fever goes viral on Bay's Facebook page
PINEAPPLE Fever is sweeping Torbay.
Torbay Mayor Gordon Oliver's decision to spend £7,000 on a Spanish palm tree as part of 'gateway' improvements at the Kerswell Gardens roundabout has attracted attention nationwide — and now beyond.
Some have criticised money being spent on the palm as Torbay Council is facing an anticipated £10million cut in budgets.
Some also say the tree looks like a pineapple.

Popular children's character Sponge Bob Square Pants lives in a mystical home — not too dissimilar from the new-look gateway on Newton Road.
A Sponge Bob toy was roped to the palm tree at the weekend and photographs went viral.
A Pineapple Fever page set up on Facebook attracted more than 800 fans in less than 48 hours.
People have posted their own satirical comments on the pineapple shaped palm.
The fan page suggests twinning the English Riviera with Sponge Bob's home — Bikini Bottom.
There is an artist's impression of a roundabout, featuring a fat pineapple by fruit giants Del Monte.
There are also photographs of Bob at his new home before it was removed on Monday.
The palm tree will soon be wrapped up for winter to protect it from the cold.
The roundabout is scheduled for demolition when the Kingskerswell bypass is finished in three years' time. The tree will be transferred to a new site.
