A FATHER-and-son fishing trip with Owen Mallia on board Outlaw out of Dartmouth turned into an impromptu competition.

The cruise took the eager anglers out to the Skerries Banks for plaice and other species found in Start Bay.

"From our first drift the young and old boys managed to catch fish continuously with a steady flow of plaice, gurnard and whiting coming on to the boat," said Mallia.

"We decided to run a simple contest for the youngsters to keep them focussed throughout their day."

Brothers Dan and Will James from Ipplepen took an early lead with some nice 1lb plus plaice coming on board as the morning wore on.

The James bothers were level-pegged for most of the day until their young friend Finn Ireland caught a 1lb 6oz plaice just edging the boys off the top slot.

The day wore on with the lads continuing to catch some fairly large mackerel, plenty of plaice and a couple of weaver fish

Just as young Ireland thought he had wrapped up his victory – Tom Allenbrook from Brixham managed to catch a decent plaice of 1lb 7oz.

Allenbrook had been diligently fishing through the early part of his day with little success, but patiently continued and mastered his baiting technique as the day wore on. He was rewarded with the largest plaice of the day – and a nice 40cm bass to seal his victory!

Trip organiser Stephen Blair from Torquay who is a friend of the youngsters and their fathers landed a fair few Plaice throughout the course of the day. He caught a small-eyed ray on his plaice gear too.

LATEST competition winners at Paignton SAC were: senior boat – Paul Millman (plaice 5-4-0, 150.0%), junior boat – Mo Bingle (thornback ray 9-4-15 93.09%).

Senior shore – Terry Buckle (garfish 1 -4-12, 94.32%), junior shore – Jonah Fletcher (garfish 1-5-1, 95.74%).

Other fish caught not in the completion: Gordon Richards (plaice 5-4-2), caught off Weymouth.

Mark Marlow bull huss (11-8-5), blonde ray of 20-7-0, and a lesser of 2-10-2 caught from a boat.

Max Bingle black bream (2-14-2), caught from a wreck.
