Plainmoor Ladies beat Brixham Villa in Pulsating Derby
PLAINMOOR Ladies have started the new year well with a 6-4 home win over local rivals Brixham Villa.
Brixham were out of the blocks quickly, with plenty of early possession to pin Plainmoor in their own half. But Plainmoor's Martha Lashbrook soon settled the nerves by slotting the ball home after a mazy run from deep in her own half. They created lots of space in behind Brixham's defence, leading to a Katie Chisholm brace and a neat finish from Katie Daines. A spirited fightback from battling Brixham made for a pulsating derby, their 2 first half goals should have been more but for the performance and bravery of Plainmoor's debutant goal keeper Emma Thorbjorg Cato (aka Tobba).
Brixham started very well in the second half before Plainmoor regained control and possession, scoring through Martha Lashbrook and Zoe Milligan - who came out of retirement just for this game. Plainmoor tired near the end, allowing Brixham pressure to lead to 2 late goals. However, Plainmoor and in particular the superb Cato in net, managed to hold their nerve and win the game 6-4.
"The game was played with a lot of skill and passion and what a brave performance from our newly signed Keeper Tobba. But I really feel the older players' experience helped us throughout the whole match," said Plainmoor Assistant Manager Russell Quaintance, "the young girls showed a really good level of skill and energy and, with the experience of the older team members, produced some really good football."

Plainmoor Ladies is a newly formed football team, grown out of Plainmoor Girls, which was formed in 2006 with just eight girls. The club now has 50 girls and stepped up to adult football this season as the first batch of recruits are too old for youth football. It has been going well, according to Assistant Manager Russell Quaintance, whose wife Julie and daughter Emma both played yesterday and were all part of the Plainmoor Girls set up 7 years ago.
"I am particularly pleased because most of our senior team came from the Plainmoor Girls set up," said Mr Quaintance, "It's been 7 years of hard work in the making and makes me very proud because I have been there from the start and now have pleasure of seeing them all progress into adult football."
The team play in the Westward Development Devon Woman's League, train at Teignmouth Community College on Tuesday evenings, and play their home games on Sunday afternoons at Quinta Road. For more information please click here.
