Plainmoor Ladies miss out on first ever cup final
PLAINMOOR LADIES missed out on a league cup final spot in their first ever season, after being outclassed by Premier Division side Alphington.
The Torquay-based side – who currently sit mid-table in the Devon Women's League Division One – were beaten 6-1 at Quinta Road by Exeter-based Alphington, who lie second place in the Premier Division.
Plainmoor took a while to settle into the game, conceding two early goals to the Premiership high flyers. With nothing to fear, Plainmoor began to settle and play some good football. Some neat passes and mazy runs in the midfield - particularly from Martha Lashbrook and Abigail Meyer – led to a surprise goal for Plainmoor. Captain Rachel Rainbird latched onto an Alphington goal kick and forced her way past the defence to strike a low right foot shot into the bottom left hand corner of the goal.
Plainmoor's persistence - coupled with the strong, icy, swirling winds at Quinta – caused Alphington some frustration in the first half, but they found their feet again before the half was through. Jodie Millet mopped up the rebound for Alphington after a great save from Plainmoor keeper Tobba Cato. She could do nothing about the freak own goal that occurred just minutes later though, a fluffed clearance sliced into her net, leaving her stranded and the scoreline 4-1 to Alphington at the break.

Plainmoor started well in the second half with some pleasing football that deserved a better end product. Alphington's superiority shone through though as the game went on, scoring once more and then saving the best for last. A blistering free kick from outside the 18 yard box that rocketed into Cato's top left corner, giving her no chance. Despite a brave Plainmoor effort to compete, Alphington left with a deserved 6-1 victory and passage to the cup final.
Plainmoor's assistant manager Russell Quaintance praised his side's work ethic, commenting: "I am very proud of all the girls. To have reached a semi-final in our first season is a fantastic achievement. The whole team gave it their all and played as hard as they could - and that's all you can ask for."
