Plaque unveiled to celebrate 100 years of Torquay Pavilion
THE public's continuing love affair with one of Torquay's most striking buildings has been renewed on its 100th birthday.
More than 130 members of the public and members of Torbay Civic Society witnessed the unveiling of a new Torbay Council plaque to commemorate its first 100 years.

The special birthday event was attended by Mayor Gordon Oliver and chairman of Torbay Council Roger Stringer.
Over the years the community has supported the protection of the Pavilion, firstly through the Friends of the Pavilion who were instrumental in saving it from demolition during the 1970's, and later when the group merged with other local committees which led to the founding of Torbay Civic Society.

Many of the founder Friends attended and were given a new history leaflet specially prepared by local historian, author and musician Mike Holgate of Torbay Libraries.
Mr Holgate performed with his guitar a special song written recently and dedicated to the 100-year history of the Pavilion.
There was an exhibition of memorabilia and photographs.
Chairman of the society, Ian Handford, and Mayor Oliver gave a short overview of the likely future for the listed building.
Mr Handford said efforts to obtain illustrations of the new proposals for the luxury hotel and building on the Pavilion car park had failed, but it is understood the Pavilion would form the entrance and public rooms of a new hotel including new restaurants, shops and a spa.
Mayor Oliver added there will be major investment to ensure the Pavilion is restored to its former glory. It was also confirmed that like the luxury hotel proposed for Oldway Mansion, there will be full public access to the hotel concourse.
Torquay Library has copies of the new free leaflet on the Pavilion.
