POLICE and licensees said Young Farmers caused no trouble over the weekend as they returned to Torquay for the first time in three years.

More than 1,000 Young Farmers from across the South West descended on Torquay for their three-day regional convention.

It was held ahead of the group's national conference which will take place in the resort next month. The national event has been held in Blackpool since 2007 after its members caused a storm by causing widespread vandalism.

Extra police officers were drafted but the weekend passed without incident.

On the first night they were in town Sgt Dave Pebworth said they only handed out three orders to leave — which effectively stops someone from returning to a designated area for anything up to 48 hours.

"There were no arrests, and we were all very impressed with the way the management and their door staff managed the influx," he said.

"We will continue to work closely with the organisers and it was very streamlined policing."

A specialist Tactical Aid Group was stationed outside Mojos on Friday night and had been drafted in especially to help bolster the numbers of officers who patrol the harbourside during the peak weekend hours.

Saturday's festivities also passed without incident.

Sgt Pebworth added: "They did very well. It is testament to the whole thing, there was no trouble at all."

Owner of the Cider Press in the centre of Torquay Richard Clarke said: "It has been amazing. They have been as good as gold. I can't wait to have them back and I think we should be doing more to bring events like this to the town."

“The young farmers created a very welcomed boost to Torquays day and nightime economy, I am looking forward to their next event in April and hoping they will return next year.”

“I agree wholeheartedly with Mr Clarke. We had the young farmers staying with us, and it was an absolute pleasure! I would welcome them back with open arms - and am looking forward to the April event. It seemed there was a lot of hesitation before this visit, and everything went off like a dream. Well done to the organisers.”
