DARTMOOR ponies are being used in Torbay to inspire people with disabilities.

The Dartmoor Pony Heritage Trust is establishing the pioneering facility at Occombe Farm, Paignton.

The £30,000 centre will give new skills to people with disabilities by caring for and handling Dartmoor ponies.

The project, called Ponies Inspiring People, will be for children and adults with physical or learning disabilities.

Dru Butterfield, charity manager for the pony trust, said: "There is no similar programme running in the West of England.

"Projects run by the trust are aimed at securing the future of the Dartmoor pony.

"We have been working with disability services for several years, they have often requested more opportunities for those with disabilities to interact with our Dartmoor ponies.

"There is substantial proof worldwide that interaction with horses or ponies is extremely beneficial, developing emotional and physical capabilities."

The ponies will also be available for school parties and the wider public. They will also be part of Occombe Farm's conservation grazing scheme, helping to maintain wildlife areas.

Dominic Acland, director of Torbay Coast and Countryside Trust which runs Occombe Farm, said: "We are very excited to be working with the Dartmoor Ponies Heritage Trust on this innovative project. Most of our cattle are out on the farm during the summer months, so our barns are available for other activities."

June Palmer, headteacher at Mayfield School, Torquay, said: "Working closely with ponies will provide opportunities for our young people to develop new skills, thereby enriching their lives. The benefits of being with and caring for living creatures are well known."

In nearby Cockington, the Torbay Riding of the Disabled Association is continuing its work.

A project manager is being recruited for the day-to-day running of the centre. The pony trust is seeking volunteers of all ages to work with the ponies and disabled people. Full training and equipment will be provided. See www.dpht.co.uk or contact Dru Butterfield on 01626 355314.
