Part of the Pop Side given to Leeds United fans
THE SHEER demand for tickets from Leeds United fans has prompted Torquay United to hand over a section of Plainmoor's Popular Side to visiting supporters for the pre-season friendly on Friday, July 27.
After just over 1,500 tickets – 1,050 on the Away End Terrace and 500 in the new Bristow's Bench grandstand – sold out quickly, Leeds asked for and got another 500 this week.
The 'Bench' has seven seated sections marked out 'T-O-R-Q-U-A-Y' in yellow and blue seats, and Leeds have been given 'T' and 'O'.
The Pop Side segregation will be done with two lines of stewards.
Giving any part of the 'Pop' to away fans has always been a difficult subject, and something which the current board has never done.
But the feeling is that this is an occasion which warrants it.
General manager Andrew Candy said: "Leeds are a very well supported team, even for pre-season friendlies away from home.
"This is an opportunity to ensure that we get as many people as possible into Plainmoor. It makes financial sense, which we're sure Torquay United fans will recognise, and as it's a friendly, our supporters will not be disadvantaged in any way.
"We are not anticipating an adverse reaction.
"All the indications are that our fans are comfortable with it, and we've seen messages from Leeds supporters saying that they appreciate the extra tickets we've sent them."
Candy stressed that United are not planning to repeat the Pop Side 'split' for any competitive matches.
