MOST of us have experienced painful feet, and despite being vital for mobility and balance, they remain one of the most neglected parts of our body.

According to the Society of Podiatrists and Chiropodists, nine out of ten people will at some point have a foot problem, and often this means that a professional is required.

Luckily for the residents of Torquay, a podiatry clinic has opened on the Terrace, just a short walk from the harbour. Terrace Podiatry has professionally equipped treatment rooms and offers advice and treatment for a whole host of foot and lower limb problems.

Kate Clayden, the director and principal podiatrist at Terrace Podiatry worked for private clinics in London and Devon before setting up in her hometown of Torquay.

"The first question people ask me is what is the difference between a podiatrist and a chiropodist? The answer is nothing at all — they are the same thing. We can be thought of as a foot doctor, and can treat and alleviate all kinds of foot disorders including toenail problems, corns and callouses, verrucas and cracked heels."

According to Kate, the most popular treatment at the clinic is the routine podiatry treatment.

It constitutes half an hour of foot pampering starting with a footbath. Nails are then neatened up with a diamond-encrusted burr, any hard skin is painlessly removed, and heels are buffed using small sandpaper discs to leave a silky smooth finish. The treatment is finished with a foot and ankle massage and every client leaves the clinic walking on air.

There are many other treatments available at Terrace Podiatry, from diabetic foot checks (including sensory and circulatory testing), to biomechanical examinations, gait analysis and a wide range of orthotics to help re-align gait and posture if required. Home visits are available in Torbay and the surrounding area for those that are unable to visit the clinic.
