Queen honours Paignton school governor's hard work
A PAIGNTON school governor has been honoured by the Queen by being presented with a British Empire Medal.
Tony Smith, a governor of White Rock Primary School, was among nine across Devon who have been chosen for their tireless community work and dedication.

They were named in the Queen's Birthday Honours in June after the medal was reintroduced for the jubilee year.
They were presented with their awards by Devon's Lord Lieutenant, Eric Dancer CBE JP, the Queen's representative in the county, at a special ceremonial event at County Hall, Exeter.

Mr Smith said: " I was overwhelmed and humbled to be named in the honours list for services to the community in Paignton.
"This covered many aspects of service to the local area including White Rock school, Hookhills community centre, scouting and Goodrington church to name a few.
"I have enjoyed working with many hard working people who I also feel need recognition in doing many great things, its takes a team to achieve."
Mr Dancer said: "These people are true community champions."
Mr Smith received the BEM award for services to the community in Paignton.
He has been a governor of White Rock Primary School since 2000 and has led the school in many innovative school improvements using an extensive knowledge of buildings maintenance and construction.
His projects include the refurbishment of the school's kitchen , project managing the new Early Years outdoor playground, encouraging fundraising through the school's summer fete and enabling the refurbishment of swimming facilities.
Tony has joined staff and pupils on residential visits which have included outdoor pursuit centres and also visits to Holland.
He has been involved in charity and community work for more than 20 years.
