RNLI Lifeguards urge South Devon bathers to stay safe
WITH the region enjoying yet more sunshine and good surf recently and the hope it’ll continue, the RNLI is encouraging people heading to the coast to try and visit a lifeguarded beach this weekend.
The charity’s lifeguards will be patrolling on 67 beaches across the south west and the Channel Islands this month.
The beaches covered by RNLI lifeguards include seven in Devon.
And for those thinking further ahead to the October half term, the RNLI urges people to put safety first and visit one of the 11 beaches in Cornwall and Devon which will have RNLI lifeguard cover at weekends and during the school holiday.

Steve Instance, RNLI Lifeguard Inspector for the south west, says people had been making the most of the late sunshine and good weather conditions this month, and hopes people will continue to head for a beach where a lifeguard team are on duty;
‘Our lifeguards are there to keep people safe, offering useful advice to help prevent accidents and a rapid reaction if something does go wrong. The red and yellow flags indicate lifeguards on duty and highlight the safe bathing areas so you can rest assured you are being watched over while you enjoy late summer conditions.
‘For those planning your half term break in October, it’s worth remembering RNLI lifeguards will be patrolling 11 beaches in Cornwall and Devon on weekends throughout the month and during the school holiday week. We’re delighted to be able to extend the lifeguard season into October and hope people will make the most of this additional safety cover at some of the busiest beaches in the south west.
'To find out more you can visit the RNLI website, or download our new Beach Finder app, available free on Android and Apple devices, which also enables you to check real-time weather information, water quality and view lifeguard season dates, patrol times and safety warnings. Our teams will be on duty from 10am in the morning until 6pm in the evening on both Saturday and Sunday and will be delighted to see you.’
The RNLI lifeguarded beaches include Bantham, Sedgewell Cove and Challaborough in the South Hams.
Beaches patrolled by RNLI lifeguards in October (weekends and 29 October – 2 November)include Bantham.
