Rare tree set on fire at Cockington

VANDALS have burnt down a rare Japanese cedar tree in Torquay's Cockington Park.

All the leaves have been burnt from the tree opposite the cricket pitch at Cockington Court.

Torbay Coast and Countryside Trust bosses are leaving the tree standing to see if it is still alive.

Chris Lingard, estate manager, said: "The incident happened on Saturday night and was discovered on Sunday morning.

"The tree is a rare Japanese cedar and part of the Cockington Arboretum. The tree will remain for the meantime as the trust will be observing it for any new growth over the summer months.

"Police have been informed and are carrying out extra patrols.

"Our Cockington friends group will be informed and asked to keep an extra look out."

One resident, who did not want to be named, said: "It is really upsetting to see what they've done to this beautiful old tree."
