BRIXHAM residents will have the chance to make their views known on the future of their town during a special neighbourhood plan consultation event.

The Neighbourhood Planning process provides a once-in-a-generation opportunity for local communities to express their ideas of how they would like their area to develop in the next 10 to 20 years.

Along with the Torbay Local Plan, it will help to determine how planning applications are considered in the coming years and how the area develops overall.

Cllr Jackie Stockman, chairman of the Brixham Neighbourhood Plan Forum, said: "We need people to come along and give their opinions about these topic areas — business, jobs and tourism, housing, community, sport and the environment, countryside, open spaces and leisure.

"We are close to publishing the first draft of our plan and need this information to make sure it accurately reflects what people want.

"Families with young children are encouraged to make a point of popping in, even if for five minutes. It's about the children's future and what environment they will have here when they have families of their own.

"What we are trying to do is produce a plan which will encourage the area to develop, but to retain its character and unspoilt areas. Only residents can make sure this happens by turning up."

The open event will take place tomorrow in the Scala Hall, Brixham, between noon and 7pm.
