A TORY MP who left Westminster to appear on TV's I'm a Celebrity Get Me Out of Here has been branded 'ridiculous' by her party colleague Dr Sarah Wollaston.

The former GP-turned-MP for Totnes accused Nadine Dorries of damaging the image of women in Parliament by 'swanning off to the jungle'.

And Dr Wollaston said the Mid-Bedfordshire MP should resign if she wanted to become a celebrity instead.

She told the Herald Express: "MPs serve their constituents best by working in Parliament rather than from the Australian jungle. Nadine Dorries' decision to chase celebrity and disappear without notice to her constituents will further undermine faith in politicians and cannot be justified."

She was among a number of fellow Conservative MPs to criticise Ms Dorries after it was revealed she could be in the Australian bush for up to a month filming the ITV show.

The Conservative Party has suspended the whip from the 55-year-old, who earns more than £65,000 as an MP, over her unannounced extended absence from Parliament.

Dr Wollaston made her frustration felt, taking to Twitter to say: "We need more women in Parliament, but it doesn't help if they make themselves look ridiculous by swanning off to the jungle."

She added later: "I am horrified. We have a serious issue in Parliament with under-representation of women. This sends out entirely the wrong message about why women are important in Parliament.

"I think it makes us look ridiculous and it brings politics into disrepute.

"Nadine should decide whether she wants to be a celebrity, and if so — if she wants to be a celebrity — in my view she should resign.

"She needs to consider what she wants to do and if actually she wants to do a serious job, which is about representing her constituents, she needs to be doing that here in Westminster, not in Australia.

"I think there are also issues about taking a kind of second salary. If she were going to be doing that in Australia, certainly that should all be returned to the taxpayer. One tweet I've had says it all: 'I hope she has to eat a lot of insects'."
