MORE than 300 pictures by 90 artists helped raise more than £3,800 for charity.

The Rotary Club of Ashburton/Buckfastleigh has ended its 14th annual charity art exhibition at Buckfast Abbey with 42 pictures sold.

The exhibition closed after 11 days and although the total number of pictures sold is down on last year's record total of 51, it still raised thousands for charities including Children's Hospice South West, Dartmoor Search and Rescue Team (Ashburton) and ShelterBox.

Central Devon Conservative MP Mel Stride visited when the exhibition was open and was taken on a tour by club president Philip Vogel, himself a Tory district councillor.

Mr Stride said: "This is my third visit to this excellent exhibition and the quality of the art on display is among the best I have seen.

"I know that the funds raised for this year's charities will make a vital contribution to their work."

Mr Vogel said "I would like to thank all those who supported our three main charities for this year, the artists, members of the public, fellow Rotarians and especially Buckfast Abbey.

"Although we did not reach last year's total number of pictures sold, this year's 42 is still pretty impressive."
