LAL Language School General Knowledge
The medal positions in Grenville had already been determined before the last round of matches, and Royal A celebrated their Championship success with a 44-37 win against their C team. The Cs held the lead briefly, following the movie taglines round, but the As regained the lead in the next round. The A lead had been pulled back to a single point by the end of second conferring but they pulled away on Canada and romped home. Second-placed Paignton Sea Anglers D had not been able to move ahead of hosts Crown & Sceptre all night up till the end of round five, but a burst of answers from No. 4 Andy Faulkner in the final section gave the Divisional runners-up a 39-36 victory. Remarkably, the other four teams in the division all finished on six match points when bottom side Paignton Sea Anglers A defeated Castle Inn 37-31. The victory took the A Anglers off the bottom of the table, to be replaced by their beaten opponents.
The destiny of the Hawkins medals was decided by a match which did not take place. Divisional leaders Bickley Mill were unable to raise a team against their nearest rivals Devonport B, giving the Paignton side the two points required to give them the Championship. However, it wasn't all bad news for the Bickley: they had already amassed enough points to finish no lower than second, and they duly claimed the runners-up spot. Devonport A's defeat of Churston Golf Club Wytookays would have pushed them up to second in the event that their B team had lost, but the win saw them finish in third place overall. Torquay Rugby Club's victory at Preston Con Club lifted them above their opponents in the table, and they finished the season in fourth position.

The final Grenville match at the Royal pitted the A team against the C team where anything other than a C team win would leave the A crew champions. For the first three rounds the proverbial fag paper sat waiting to find a gap between the teams, and the final round started with the scores at 26 apiece. However the C team's superior recall of events in November 2009 gave them both match victory and Grenville Championship, with the A team having to be content with runners-up spot. Mid-table sides Crown & Sceptre and Paignton Sea Anglers D fought out a 24-all draw, with both sides having held the lead during the course of the match. Castle Inn recorded their first sport victory of the season at Paignton Sea Anglers A, with competition sponsor Trevor Massey weighing in with nine of the Castle's points.
Devonport A completed their Hawkins Championship with a 100% record, with their final win a 25-10 result against Churston Golf Club Wytookays. As in the GK competition, Bickley Mill's failure to raise a team saw them drop a place in the table, leaving the way clear for their scheduled opponents Devonport B to claim the runners-up position. Preston Con Club victory over Torquay Rugby Club, in which they led from start to finish, lifted them up a place in the table and they finished fourth.
For the next five weeks the League is trialling a different scoring system under league conditions, so that all participating teams can experience it at first hand in order to make an informed choice when the subject is discussed at the AGM. The divisions have been re-arranged with the top three of Grenville and Hawkins making up one, with the remaining six teams making up the other. Divisions have been allocated the previously-used names Drake and Raleigh, and there are no trophies being contested.
