SPAN-TASTIC! Shaldon Bridge Olympic Torch Relay celebrations

MORE then 7,000 people turned out in Shaldon and Teignmouth to see the Olympic Torch Relay cross the Teign.

Musicians Matt Bellamy, Christopher Wolstenholme and Dominic Howard of Muse acted as celebrity torchbearers across the Shaldon Bridge.

Joining them in carrying the flame during its remarkable crossing of the Teign Estuary were Shaldon's Alec Collyer and Exminster's Paul Ruff.

The magic moment was one of many during an entire day of local celebrations organised by Teignbridge District Council and Teignmouth Town Council in partnership with local schools, sports clubs and organisations.

Thousands of people joined events at Teignmouth Den and Teignmouth Rugby Club, including Teignbridge's School Games which saw more than 250 local children compete in a range of sports at Teignmouth Rugby Club.

Winners Kingskerswell Primary School joined silver and bronze winners Shaldon Primary School and Decoy Primary School for formal medal presentations by local officials, cheered on by a crowd of hundreds.

Meanwhile spectators enjoyed sporting displays and events including BMX stunts, Slacklining (acrobatics performed along a suspended elastic cord), X-biking, Rowing, Zumba, Body Combat classes and more.

To end the day of festivities and celebrations, the Ship Inn held an evening of musiic in a marquee on the Den.
