CONMEN operating a 'ringing the changes' scam hit the same shop in Totnes twice in one day.

Now police are warning businesses in the area to be on their guard against what may be a gang of men working the con.

Police issued a warning about the scam at the end of last month after a man conned £30 out of a member of the bar staff at the Royal Seven Stars Hotel.

On Wednesday morning last week a con man operated the same kind of scam on a shop in Fore Street — confusing staff into giving him an extra £10 after messing around asking for different kinds of change.

Then a different man appears to have returned to the same business in the afternoon and operated the scam all over again — once again getting away with a small amount of cash.

In between somebody went into the Harbourne filling station at Harbertonford where they used the scam to get away with £10.

All the men were white and two were said to talk in a northern accent.

The man who stole from the filling station drove off in a black Audi A3 car.

One of the men was in his early 40s, of stocky build with short, dark hair and a moustache.

Another was clean shaven with thinning, short, fair hair.

Police are renewing their warning to shopkeepers and other businesses to watch out for the men who may still be in the area.

“They sound like two of the Village People. I expect the cowboy and the red indian were hiding outside somewhere to keep lookout”
