A SCHEME aimed at keeping people safe when walking the streets of Newton Abbot has been praised by the Home Secretary.

Cllr Neil Wilson is working on the Safer Streets initiative, where town centre businesses offer a 'safe haven' for people who feel intimidated or in immediate danger from anti-social behaviour.

He is writing to businesses to get them to sign up to the campaign but has already received backing from MP Anne Marie Morris and Theresa May who discussed the bid in the House of Commons. Ms May said she thought the scheme could have 'a real impact'. See Page 16.
