TORBAY artist Emma Carter is staging a one-woman exhibition at the Brixham Adult and Community Learning Centre, featuring paintings of her travels through Europe.

Emma's golden landscapes are reminiscent of Provence and Tuscany, and have a dreamlike quality.

Her family home on Burgh Island and her current home in the Bay are reflected in the acrylic paintings of Berry Head and local harbours.

Tiny signs of human life are apparent in her paintings — a glimpse of a sailboat, a row of planted olive trees, a small dwelling in a field of flowers set against the immense backdrop of mountains.

In today's hectic and overloaded society, Emma's vast and open compositions provide a visual escape to a serene and ethereal world.

She has been influenced by the impressionist movement and launched her career after graduating from Middlesex University with a BA Honours degree in fine art.

Recent commissions include seascape paintings for the Prime Minister Gordon Brown.

Emma is the organiser of the Great Create event — a six-week art exhibition at the National Trust's Greenway property.

Last year she also organised Blank Canvas at Torre Abbey with a sculpture trail around the gardens.

Emma has also taught adult classes at the Brixham Adult and Community Learning Centre and was a founder member of the Brixham Shoal of Artists.

Her exhibition at the adult community centre is taking place from January 6 to February 13 and will be open daily from 9.30am to 3pm.

All of the work on show will be for sale.
