TORBAY deputy mayor Dave Thomas (pictured) has credited the Herald Express Lovelife campaign for getting him back on the straight and narrow, or should that be the slim and healthy.

The Blatchcombe, Paignton, councillor admits he has had to watch his weight since he was a child.

He suffered serious illness in 2010, was in hospital for seven months, then had another operation in 2011 and lost a massive amount of weight.

He was actually under weight and was eating to gain pounds not lose them.

But then he started putting weight on and says he didn't really notice.

However, at the launch of the loveLIFE campaign early last year he pledged to lose two stone. What he has lost is the same stone, twice.

He said: "I did lose a stone last year, but it's not easy and like everybody else it's easy to slip, and once you slip it's hard to get back into the frame of mind.

"But two weeks before Christmas, I realised the loveLIFE campaign would be checking on my progress, and actually I hadn't lost a pound.

"That's when I joined Slimming World in Foxhole, Paignton.

"Stuart Bilverstone runs it and he has lost eight-and-a-half stone in 12 months. I told myself, if he could do it, so could I. I am the only man in the class but that's not a problem.

"I lost weight over Christmas for the first time ever. I have lost one-and-a-half stone to date. I enjoy what I am doing, I am well on course to lose the two stone.

"I also downloaded a pedometer on to my phone and challenged myself to complete the 10,000 steps a day which the NHS say you should do to stay healthy. To be honest achieving that is very hard.

"But since January I do it on average five out of seven days. But if I have meetings all day I will only do 2,000 steps which just shows you. So I have to do five times my normal daily walking.

"I feel a bit fitter for it, it is certainly helping my weight loss. It's all a case of getting your mind right, once you have, you can get on with it.

"I found doing it on my own harder, but by being part of a group you celebrate each others' wins and understand each others losses and commit to what you are going to achieve the next week. Your provide support for each other and I find that very, very helpful."

Slimming World meets at the Foxhole Community Centre every Thursday starting at 7.30pm. For more information, call Stuart on 07917 541184.
