A WIN at the final round completed a perfect Newton Abbot Fishing Association Teign Trophy campaign for Ashley Smith.

The junior summer league competition finished on Wheel Pond at the weekend, and Smith ruled on peg one with four carp on pole and Poo Paste for 8kg 700g, including a specimen of nearly 4kg.

It meant Smith ended up the runaway winner in the overall standings, with five match wins for a perfect score of five points.

Second on the day was Alex Daniels with one tench and one carp for 2kg 640g, and third was Elliott Fay with 2kg 230g.

Fay ended up second in the final league standings with 14 points, just beating third-placed Ben Avery with 16 points. Alex Daniels was fourth with 26.

The first two rounds of the seniors' NAFA Club League have been held on Wheel and Key Ponds.

In round one on Wheel, the winner was Mike Hadley on peg three with carp on legered pellets for 8kg 080g.

Second was Michael Mudge with 4kg 930g of carp on the pole, and third was Steve Walker with 4kg 880g.

Round two on Key was won by youngster Samuel Powell with 3kg 480g, second was Steve Walker with 1kg 760g, and third was Mark Newman with 1kg 720g.

Elsewhere, NAFA waters continue to produce good catches for the pleasure angler.

In Dores Pond, carp to 25lb, bream to 9lb and roach and perch are all feeding.

Linhay is producing nets of up to five tench in a session, as are First and Island Ponds.

Sawmills' good form continues with skimmers and bream on long pole or feeder, as well as carp to 20lb on boilies.

Roach, perch and skimmers can all be found at Bradley on maggot or caster.

Fish Wapperwell for carp, tench and skimmers on pellet or corn, while Spring and Charlecombe continue to produce good catches of carp.

PLENTY of action on both lakes at Town Parks Fishery saw anglers having great sport.

The top Match Lake continued to fish very well with both silvers and carp coming to the bank in numbers.

Local rod John Stevens had a great day, taking a large bag of silvers on the maggot, then banking 15 carp to 8lb 3oz on the pellet waggler.

Fishing from peg 10, Stevens' carp fell to banded pellet and came from tight to the side of the main island whilst most of the silvers were taken mid-water.

Anglers along the dam wall also saw plenty of action with the carp coming to the bank in numbers.

Brian Gadd took 35 during a night session that saw fish to the 10lb mark! Once again coarse pellet proved successful although some fish fell to small strawberry boilies.

On the lower Specimen Lake the sport was a little slower although the catfish continued to produce excellent fishing.

Steve Roberts and Andy Smart fished an overnighter from pegs four and five.

Fishing halibut pellet and cell boilies both anglers banked catfish to 22lb 5oz although three fish were lost after breaking free!

Two 'massive' cats also escaped the rod of Richard Jenkins, who lost the fish after epic battles which resulted with the fish snagging the lines and snapping off!

Catfish runs are often very fast after the fish has played with the bait for a while. Anglers see their droppers moving slightly several times while the fish checks out the bait.

Suddenly the cat will pick up the bit and run, usually towards their lair or around the nearest snag.

If you are not quick enough to pull the hook home and tighten the line you are almost certainly going to lose the fish.

Once hooked, the fish will often shake its head to try to 'grind' through the line — several 25lb leaders have been easily parted recently.

The Town Parks Saturday club kicks off tomorrow with juniors, or anybody who would like to try their hand at fishing, enjoying a tutored session with all bait and tackle supplied.

QUEENIE the carp appeared twice at Newbarn Farm this week to Paul Sampson and Joe Sutton, and weighed 28lb.

Sampson also won the week's catch report lottery.

Connor Nettleton fished Mirror Lake and had a good bag of silvers at 35lb, but no carp this time.

Noticeably, a lot of catches have come on some of the old regular baits like meat, pellet and halibut boilies.

Joe Reed caught a beautiful amber-coloured ghost carp at 17lb — this will be a fish brought down from Willow Pool at 12lb four years ago.

It's clearly putting on weight at a sensible rate, let's hope we see this one join Casper at the 20lb-plus range.

Jack Lord caught a 25lb common carp that took 15 minutes to bank. But it was worth it — it gave Lord a new personal best.

IT'S BEEN a busy time at South View Farm Coarse Fishery with the Bank Holiday weekend, and many anglers have seen good sport across the three pools.

Willow Pool gave John Norman nine carp to 10lb using surface-fished bread.

Fred Smith had 11 carp to 8lb using legered pellet and corn.

Kingfisher Pool gave fishery regular Stephen Hird 46 carp, which included two doubles of 11lb 4oz and 12lb 12oz to method feeder with sweetcorn during a full day's fishing.

Michael Hird had 30 carp to pole, fishing pellet and corn.

Brad Mansfield had seven carp to 7lb using method feeder with corn, and son Christopher, aged 12, had eight carp to 9lb using the same approach.
