He has exhibited at the V&A and Tate St Ives and is known for his colour landscapes, often of single locations patiently observed over many months.

This new series is of Devon's River Exe. The artist revisited sites in a three-year project which captured changing seasons, atmospheric conditions and effects of time.

Jem, a professor and teacher at Plymouth University, believes there is 'craftsmanship' behind both his use of local resources and the image-making process.

He uses a large-format camera to produce plate negatives enlarged at a commercial lab, then mounted onto 44'' x 53'' cotton rag paper.

These are contrasted with the more intimate Dartmoor Streams series — contact-printed by placing the negative directly onto photographic paper.

There are water-related gallery activities and Big Draw events planned for half-term to create a collective waterscape.

Free gallery tours with Jem Southam will take place on Monday at 11am where student groups and the public can join the artist in a question and answer session about his photography.

Admission to the gallery which is open daily 10am-5.30pm, is free.

To book a place on the gallery tour, call 01626 832223.

There will also be an illustrated talk by Jem on Thursday, October 18, at 6.30pm where he will discuss his new series within the context of his photographic practice. Tickets cost £7/£5. Advance booking only on 01626 832223.
