South Devon College principal's delight at success of 'rising stars'

SOUTH Devon College has paid tribute to its 'rising stars'.

The college's annual Further Education Awards Ceremony saw 190 students honoured at a celebration day at the International Riviera Conference Centre in Torquay.

Principal Stephen Criddle said: "I never cease to be amazed by the achievements of our students and it was so good to see their parents, families and friends supporting them and celebrating their awards."

Guest speakers included Totnes MP Sarah Wollaston and Larry F Devane, president of Redlands Community College in Oklahoma, USA, a higher education institution with which South Devon has established a partnership agreement.

Some of the main awards included the Paul Haigney Award for Outstanding Academic Achievement and Contribution — sponsored by the Friends of South Devon College — which went to Oliver Hicks for his outstanding A level results. The 18-year-old achieved an A* and two A grades in mathematics, computing and physics and is now studying mechanical engineering at Oxford University.

Another success story came from Harry Satloka, of Paignton, who won the Hospitality and Catering Outstanding Apprentice of the Year Award.

He made such an impression in a job interview with the world-famous Ritz Hotel in London that he was offered a job in private dining.

The Basketball Academy picked up the Will Dolman Award for Outstanding Sporting Achievement.

The award was made in honour of former football academy student Will Dolman who died last year.

The academy comprised Cameron Caton, Matt Cheeseworth, Jordan Culley, Sam Flanders, Tristan Hall, Ben Hillborne, Caleb Hutchins, James Noble, James Russell and Jake Westlake.
