South Devon College university students graduate at Dartington Hall

DARTINGTON HALL hosted a day of celebration for South Devon College last week as over 200 of the college's university students graduated in the Great Hall, watched by their friends, families and guests.

The students were awarded their Foundation Degrees and professional awards by David Coslett, Deputy Vice-Chancellor of Plymouth University, who award all the degrees delivered at the college.  

"The graduation ceremonies were real celebrations of the fantastic achievements of the students at South Devon College," said Professor Coslett, "It was just the great setting at Dartington Hall; it was the confidence and energy of those graduating which made the occasion. It was a proud day for their families, College staff and Plymouth University."

Students graduated in Animal Science, Business, Building Services Engineering, Combined Studies, Computing, Construction, Creative Digital Media, Early Years Care & Education, Engineering, Events & Conference Management, Exercise Science & Fitness, Healthcare Practice, Law, Outdoor Education, Performance Practice and Events Management, 3D Design (Contemporary Craft and Interior Design), Tourism & Hospitality Management, Visual Studies, Yacht Operations, Young People & Community Services, PGCE, Teaching in the Lifelong Learning Sector and CMI.

The UPC (Academic Partnership Colleges) Student Award was awarded to Computing student Daniel Horsey from Torquay. Dr Ross Pomeroy, Faculty Partnership Manager, Academic Partnerships at Plymouth University, told the audience about Daniel's progress through the College; starting at Level 1 with a plumbing course, and - through five years hard work and commitment – finishing by achieving a Foundation Degree in Computing, with Distinction.  Daniel will be progressing to Plymouth University to top up to Honours level and is well placed to gain a first class degree.  He hopes to go on to Masters Level after his undergraduate degree. All the new graduates were in full academic dress of gowns, caps and hoods and had the chance to meet up with fellow students on the day and compare notes on what they are planning to do next.

"We are really proud of all of our students and their achievements, and it is always so great to see students' families and friends joining in celebrating their successes too," said College Principal Stephen Criddle, "Dartington Hall Trust offers an outstanding venue for our graduating higher education students and apprentices."

Dartington Hall Trust is based on a 1,200 acres (4.9 km2) estate near Dartington and Totnes. The medieval 'Great Hall', which was the scene for the Graduation ceremonies, was built between 1388 and 1400 for John Holand, Earl of Huntingdon, half-brother to Richard II.
