South Hams staff work round the clock during flood alert
South Hams District Council staff have been working around the clock to make sure there are enough sandbags for households affected by flooding.
They have now filled around 2,000 sandbags since the recent spate of bad weather first started.
The council’s depots are normally closed at the weekend but on Saturday a team opened up both the Totnes depot in Babbage Road and the Ivybridge depot in Ermington Road.
In Ivybridge, the depot’s entire supply of around 100 sandbags were issued to residents.

With sandbags in such demand across the district, staff also went into the Totnes depot yesterday to replenish stocks. They made around 300 more sandbags and new supplies have now been delivered to the depots at Ivybridge and Kingsbridge.
Council depots keep limited stocks which residents can collect normally from Monday to Friday, 8am to 4pm. People are asked to call first on 01803 861234 to check availability, and to only request sandbags where there is a serious risk of flooding.
Sandbags are restricted to ten per property and are not supplied to commercial premises.
Residents are also urged to make their own plans when it comes to sandbags as the council stocks are limited and depots may be inaccessible in the event of severe weather.
Sand and sandbags can be bought from local hardware stores and builders merchants.
