THE lead actor from a professional production of Jesus Christ Superstar has written to students in Totnes to wish them luck with their version of the show.

ITV's 'Superstar' winner Ben Forster, who returns to the role of Jesus alongside Tim Minchin and Mel C this spring in the Superstar Arena Tour, sent a letter to the 50-strong cast at King Edward VI Community College.

Jo Crook, who is directing the college's annual show, noticed that Ben was playing Brad in the Rocky Horror Show at Torquay's Princess Theatre, and wrote to him to see if he could visit the college.

She said: "His busy schedule meant it wasn't possible for him to visit, so he wrote to wish them luck instead."

Jo added: "A number of past professional productions of Jesus Christ Superstar have drawn on both the traditional setting of the story and aspects of modern culture. We have decided to set the story against a completely contemporary backdrop drawing on recent global unrest.

"The music in the show is incredibly challenging, but we have been impressed by the effort and energy students bring to each rehearsal."

The show runs from Wednesday, January 30, to Saturday, February 2.

Performances take place at 7.30pm at the Ariel Centre, on the college campus.

Tickets cost £8 for adults, £6 for concessions, and £25 for a family of two adults and two children. Saturday, February 2, is a gala evening. The audience is encouraged to dress more formally. Tickets for this evening cost £10, £8 and £32, and include a complementary drink.

Tickets are available from the Ariel Centre on 01803 869200.
