ASDA Paignton has helped to restore Paignton Pier to its full glory with a donation to ensure it is the town’s shining light.

The Borough Close store has donated £300 to help replace the lighting at the pier, which has brightened up Paignton’s shoreline for more than 100 years.

The 780-foot pier was opened to the public for the first time in June 1879 and was home to many forms of entertainment, famously playing host to a comic opera by Gilbert and Sullivan. It also became a regular stop for paddle steamers travelling between Torquay and Brixham.

Colleagues from Asda Paignton visited the pier to witness the official switch on of the new lights.

Richard Stevens, pier manager, said: “Maintaining the pier is a big project and requires a lot of funds.

"We were resigned to waiting until next year to even consider replacing the lights so we are extremely grateful to Asda Paignton for this generous donation.”

Rob Robertson, store manager, added: “Everyone at the store is proud to contribute to the redevelopment of this iconic landmark.

"The opening of our store created 60 jobs for local people and supporting the community in any form is important to them. Paignton Pier has such a rich history and we hope everyone can enjoy it for another 100 years in the way it should be seen.”

Mr Stevens added: "We are really pleased with the new lights around the front entrance, as it starts to get dark, the Pier stands out like a beacon on the seafront. We are also pleased that with help from Asda, we have been able to replace the old faded high voltage neon with the lastest 'low energy LED'.

"Apart from low running costs and long life, the other advantage of the new lights is that they are colour changing, it's a great effect to see them changing through more colours than there are in the rainbow. We thank Asda for their support and are sure that the people of Paignton will appreciate the addition to the seafront lighting."
