She is encouraging older people to get out and about and take advantage of the discounts.

"This is a great initiative especially for people who live on a pension," she said.

"It is also an incentive for people to get out and about, grab some lunch or a coffee or even pamper themselves and buy something special."

Market Walk is hoping pensioners will feel less of the pinch with Sliver Savers Fridays.

Roger Smith, Market Walk centre manager, said: "Newton Abbot has a large population of over-55s and we felt launching Silver Savers would be a great way to provide local shoppers with something extra."

Discounts include a Friday carvery for £5.75 at Fuchsia restaurant , a free jewellery cleaning service at H Samuel, 10 per cent off goods at The Body Shop, Mr Biscuits and Shaul's Bakery, and £25 for a cut and finish at Minx hairdressers.

Devon County Council bus pass holders will also get free travel on Country Bus.

At supermarket Iceland, shoppers can register in store for bonus card to win prizes, savings and free delivery.

To take advantage, go along to participating stores and take ID which shows your age.

“I remember Mrs. Nicholls from the time I worked for Newton Abbot U.D.C., some 40 years ago. Good on you, Mrs. Nicholls, either HE is showing a very old photograph, or you haven't changed a bit!”

“Very generous of H. Samuel to offer a free jewellery cleaning service. The cost to them is about 3p, the price of one Steredent tablet!”
