Successive crashes at A38 blackspot cause mile-long tailbacks
TWO road accidents within minutes of each other caused major hold-ups yesterday near the scene of a fatal crash just days before on the A38 at South Brent.
Before emergency services arrived at the scene of the first accident, a second occurred at the same spot. The first 999 shout came at 8.40am when a red Nissan Micra collided with a Porsche 944 near the Shell garage on the northbound carriageway.
On Saturday, a man from Wales died after being in collision with a car just outside the Carew station at 3.30am.
He was yesterday named as Dean Bignall, also known as Harry.
Yesterday, the driver of the Micra, from Kingsbridge, suffered minor cuts. He was taken to Plymouth's Derriford Hospital for treatment.
Just three minutes later at the same location another Nissan Micra left the carriageway and ended up on its roof in a ditch 20ft from the hard shoulder.
The driver, from Ivybridge, was not hurt in the accident. No other vehicles were involved.
It is understood the second accident was caused as a result of the congestion which built up quickly after the first collision.
A police spokesman said the Exeter-bound carriageway was partially blocked for two hours before its was fully re-opened.
Queues of traffic were reported to extend for miles back towards Plymouth while the crash scenes were cleared.

“I think you've got it the wrong way round Richard. The lesson is, rubbish drivers generally buy Nissan Micras. (As well as Volvos.)
LOL”

“Think the lesson to be learned here is, if you don't want to crash. Don't buy a Nissan Micra!”
