Under gloriously warm autumnal skies the Mid Devon Hunt rode out in all its magnificence.

Forty riders took their mounts on the all-day hunt and rode through the countryside until the light faded.

The opening meet of the season began at Chagford on Saturday morning.

The hunt can trace its ancestry back to the late 1700s and successfully weathered the fox hunting ban to survive and is as popular as ever.

George Lyon-Smith, hunts master, said because it was the first meet of the season there was an extra buzz to proceedings.

He said: "It's always a terrifically exciting atmosphere – but the first meet is always a bit more special.

"We had a marvellous time with riders of all ages, from the very young upwards, taking part.

"There were no mishaps and the weather was incredibly kind to us with day-long sunshine and no rain."

The hunters will take to the saddle again tomorrow and again on Saturday.

“The ban was nothing more than a political stunt.”

“"successfully weathered the fox hunting ban" - It's funny how some people choose to describe blatant defiance of the law. I suppose Jimmy Savile "successfully weathered the rape ban"?

"There were no mishaps" - If Mr Kenny's embarrassing failure to keep his hounds within a couple of miles of him isn't a mishap, then no, there were no mishaps. No mishaps at all were strewn all over half of Devon wondering where their huntsman had gone.”
