AN EVENT raising awareness of services for people with sight problems is being held in Torquay.

The exhibition at the Riviera International Centre will include a talk by Andy Stokes, a visually impaired sailor who has represented Great Britain and competed internationally in athletics.

Toby Davey will also speak about his work developing VocalEyes which is a nationwide audio description company providing access to the arts for blind and partially-sighted people.

Information will be given about a wide range of services and opportunities, including sports activities; the arts for people with visual impairment; rehabilitation officers for the visually impaired; Action for Blind People; optometrists; the low vision clinic; assistive technology such as screen magnification and speech output software, and emotional support.

During the day, awards will be made to volunteers who have helped people across South and East Devon.

The event is open to any patients with visual impairments, their carers, and interested health professionals.

Braille versions of the delegate pack can be provided in advance on request.

Fully sighted volunteers will be available to help people with poor sight and can meet individuals at the door by prior arrangement.

The event takes place on March 12 and places must be booked in advance.

Anyone wishing to attend should book a place by ringing the Torbay Hospital eye department on 01803 654830 or 01803 655123 to request a booking form.
