FOOTBALLING friends turned back time when they took to the pitch in memory of David Chalk, who died suddenly at the age of 27.

Two Westlands School Year 10 and 11 teams from 1995 took each other on at Ipplepen FC's ground, raising more than £750 for the Special Baby Care Unit at Torbay Hospital.

In its heyday the Year 11 side won the Devon Cup and reached the last 16 of the National Tournament — but 12 years later David collapsed and died.

In recent months a photograph of the 1995 Westlands School players was posted on social networking website Facebook.

Its appearance brought back many memories for David's friends, and they opted to arrange the commemorative football match in his honour.

Jay Dibbert, who organised the event with Justin Yeates, said: "It was fantastic. We're overwhelmed by the support we had.

"There must have been more than 100 people there, and a lot of Westlands teachers turned up, which was nice. It really took us aback.

"We raised £750 on the day and I'm still getting cheques coming in, so the total is rising.

"It was a great tribute to David. There was a brilliant atmosphere. It was so successful, we plan to do it again next year.

"Both sets of players signed one of the shirts and we gave it to his parents. They were very emotional.

"The score was 3-1 to the Year 10 team, so the younger boys beat the older ones. I think they were in better shape. They hadn't eaten so many pies down the years.

"There was plenty of friendly rivalry between the teams — we all had fun."

The event was sponsored by an array of South Devon companies, including Pro-Direct and Rosebuds Florists, and some of the raffle prizes were provided by Plymouth Argyle.
