Teign school to remain open as swine flu strikes
A PUPIL at another South Devon school has been diagnosed with swine flu.
The announcement was made on Teign School's website on Friday after it was revealed the pupil was suffering from the H1N1 strand of the flu virus.
In a letter sent out to parents, Vyv Game (pictured) head teacher at the Kingsteignton specialist science school, confirmed the case of swine flu but insisted it was 'not a cause for alarm' and said the school would not be closed.
He said: "The illness in the vast majority of cases is similar in type and severity to seasonal flu.
"However, it is sensible to act to reduce, as much as possible, the further spread of this infection.
"Following advice from the Local Authority and Health Protection Authority, we will not be closing the school."
Health officials have handed out advice to both children and parents.
Parents are being asked to keep children showing flu symptoms including temperatures of 38 degrees, aches and pains and headaches and sore throats at home.
The school is also asking that parents encourage students to comply with staff guidance on all aspects of hygiene and report any case of swine flu.
In the letter Mr Game said Year 10 students are on work experience this week and are asked to attend their placements.
He said: "If they are unable to attend please would you contact the employer in the first instance and then inform the school.
"If a student would normally receive seasonal flu vaccine because of an existing medical condition or is pregnant then if they have direct contact with a case of swine flu they should ask their doctor for advice on whether they need preventative treatment."
He added it was important everyone at the school followed good hygiene procedures, including regular washing of hands with soap and water, cleaning surfaces regularly to get rid of germs, as well as using a tissue to cover your mouth and nose when coughing or sneezing and putting all tissues in a bin.
Anyone who experiences fever accompanied by two or more of the following symptoms – cough, sore throat, runny nose, headache or limb/joint pain — is to phone their GP or NHS Direct on 0845 4647.
