Investors In People is the national benchmark of achieving business objectives through people management and Teignbridge District Council is among the few highly successful public and private sector organisations that passed the criteria.

Independent assessor Angela Riley carried out the review, which looked at 39 demanding criteria that aims to deliver quality services to the public through members of staff and management.

She is familiar with Teignbridge having carried out similar reviews since 2001 and has now granted the council with its fifth IIP accreditation, something it has been improving every three years for the last 15 years.

With the assessment being carried out every three years, the assessor could see continuing improvements at Teignbridge, which does well developing promising staff to meet the needs of the organisation.

The official report said that the council has created a flexible workforce that is open to change, confident in itself and leadership, willing to use new skills and take risks.

Over the five day inspection, the assessor spoke to over 50 members of staff from the Chief Executive, to apprentices with many others in between. The overall outcome was that Teignbridge continues to meet – and often exceeds – the requirements of the core Investors In People national standard.

With companies all over the world applying for the scheme, Teignbridge is in good company and offers a working environment on par with many of the world’s best known brands.

Cllr Mike Walters, Executive Portfolio Holder for Corporate Services, said:

“This is excellent news for Teignbridge. Our staff have been working incredibly hard to deliver top quality services to the public and continuously improve their skills.

“The council is positive and forward thinking and the teams in each department go out of their way to be outward-looking, customer focussed and helpful.

“We are all thrilled to be a certified Investors In People and are now looking forward to the future and how we can develop staff even further.”

The report states:

“The outstanding training opportunities on offer are a continuing area of strength, the council has some highly-skilled and forward thinking managers.

“For virtually the first time in any organisation, people were able to give examples how their line manager had developed and improved in their management roles following the Institute of Leadership and Management programme.”

The report shows there are very clear signs of development within the council, with the assessment noting that most members of staff are positive about themselves, their service and the future for Teignbridge.
