Teigns have spy dossier on promotion rivals

TEIGNMOUTH entertain Tiverton on Saturday in what should be the Cornwall & Devon Division's match of the day.

Table-topping Teignmouth are almost there in the promotion race, which is a three-handed affair involving St Ives (2nd) and Tiverton (3rd).

Teignmouth are taking the game seriously, to the extent that director of rugby Andy Crossman went spying on Tiverton when they defeated St Ives 41-12 two Saturdays ago.

There is no point spying on anyone if you are going to give the game away, but Crossman revealed there were some things he learned from the exercise.

"Tiverton are a bit more organised and play with more purpose than they did when we first played them," said Crossman.

"Putting Jeff Robinson in the centre has made them more powerful and Wayne Broomfield on the right wing is a threat we didn't have to cope with before.

"The half-backs work well together and help keep the game structured.

"We know if we win we are probably on our way up, but I can assure everyone this is not a game we are going to take lightly."

Tiverton are 13 points behind Teignmouth and by their own admission unlikely to overtake them.

However, Tiverton can catch St Ives, who are only seven points in front, and that's their motivation for Saturday's game.

"I can't see us catching Teignmouth as looking at their fixures they ought to win enough games between now and the end of the season to stay top, even if we win there," said Tiverton's director of rugby Charlie Birt.

"Lose down there – and they are overwhelming favourites – then we are probably out of it. Win and we can think about catching St Ives."

Tiverton had no game last Saturday, but while they are injury free there are doubts over the availability of wing Henry Frankpitt, fly-half Jimmy Atkins and centre Sam Smith.

Teigmouth, fresh from a 39-10 victory over the OPMs, have some thinking to do with players coming back into a winning set up.

New signing Mike Saxton, who has switched from Newton Abbot, came in at full-back for the absent Dan Force and kicked 19 points on his debut. Force returns.

Prop George Mowson was out with a shoulder injury but should be back. However, Rob Viner would feel aggrieved to lose the shirt.

And wing Chris Sherlock had a 20-minute run out, his first since suffering a broken hand back in September.

Will Sowden (2), Colin Aldworth and Luke Pattison had a try each against the OPMs with Sexton kicking everything else.
