A TEAM of self-confessed tinkerers will have a dream come true when they appear on Scrapheap Challenge on Sunday.

Paignton firefighter Alan Gilson, Torquay plumber Simon Crimp and shopkeeper Andy Lang, also from Torquay, have teamed up to create a motorised super surfboard from scrap.

The three 42 year olds will star on Channel 4 this Sunday at 5.30pm.

Andy, who owns the Sign Shop in Torre, said: "If you are the sort of person who enjoys messing about with engines in the garage then this show is the very peak. It is nirvana.

"It is what every tinkerer wants to do."

The team, called the Beach Bums, took on the challenge to build a surfboard to carry the whole team at high speed, but which could only be steered by leaning.

In the new show format, hosted by Dick Strawbridge, three teams battle it out with different challenges each week, to get the chance to go through to the grand final at the end of the series.

Andy said: "We took this challenge to the limit by fixing three windsurf boards together and fitting a massive 1,000cc, 150 horse power superbike engine to it.

"The engine was in the garage as a spare for my race bike so it was the perfect choice."

Channel Four film crews filmed at the team's homes in Torquay to film the progress of the build.

The race took place at the Cumberland basin in Bristol, next to the SS Great Britain.

"We thought it would be a great laugh and fitting to race in full Evil Knievel costumes made by my hard working mum," said Andy

"It was a brilliant experience and should make for a fantastic show on Sunday."

The team have appeared on the show several times before and reached the final in series nine.
