Torbay Council Needs You!
Torbay Council is looking for two people to assist in the maintenance of high standards of conduct, ethics and probity across the council. The Independent Person will be expected to contribute towards promoting and encouraging high standards of conduct by bringing an independent and impartial voice to issues relating to complaints about a Councillor. Specifically the views of the Independent Person must be sought, and taken into account, by the Authority before it makes its decision on an allegation. The Independent Person may also be asked by the Standards Committee and/or the council to assist in reviewing the general conduct of Councillors from time to time; the Council's member development programme and the council's local protocols. Roger Heath, Independent Person said: "I feel it is important that the council operates in a fair and professional way and the Standards Committee helps to keep check of this. Serving on the Standards Committee is a rewarding job for those of us who do not want to get involved in party politics. I will be standing down in the near future and we are now looking for a new independent member to replace me." Anyone who has been a councillor or officer of Torbay Council or Brixham Town Council during the last five years, or a member of any political party cannot be considered. Applicants cannot be a close relative of any officer or member of either council or have made a formal complaint to the council in respect of the behaviour of any member of Torbay Council or Brixham Town Council in the past four years. The Standards Committee currently meets three times a year. However, it is expected that assistance will be required from the Independent Person on at least a monthly basis. You will be provided with training on the administration and organisation of the council and the role of the Independent Person within the council. You would be expected to serve a four-year term of office. For further information about becoming an independent member of the Standards Committee and an application form, please contact Lisa Antrobus, Governance Support Officer on 01803 207064 or email: lisa.antrobus@torbay.gov.uk The closing date for the receipt of applications is Friday 15 March 2013. It is anticipated that interviews will be held in April 2013.
