Torbay Hospital's invitation to those affected by baby loss
TORBAY Hospital’s annual baby remembrance weekend is being held this year on Saturday and Sunday December 1 and 2.
The loss of a baby during pregnancy or in infancy can affect all family members, whether they are parents, grandparents, siblings or part of the extended family.
This remembrance weekend aims to provide all who have experienced the loss of a baby with a way to remember their loved ones no matter how long ago they experienced their loss.
The remembrance weekend is arranged each year by Torbay Hospital’s Maternity, Chaplaincy and A&E staff in conjunction with the Totnes branch of the Still Birth and Neonatal Death Society, ‘Little Footprints’.

There will be a craft afternoon on the Saturday including a range of activities suitable for all providing the chance to create a piece in remembrance of their loved ones.
The Sunday will feature a remembrance service in the hospital chapel and is open to all family members regardless of religious beliefs. The service will include special prayers, poems and readings as well as lighting of candles and carefully chosen music from the hospital choir. There will also be an opportunity for families to write a message on a star and hang these on the branches of the trees which will be brought in from the Hospital's Heartsease remembrance garden.
Rev. Martin Manley of Torbay Hospital Chaplaincy said: “Christmas is often a time of mixed emotions for families who have experienced the loss of a baby.
“We know from previous remembrance weekends that families appreciate the comfort this event gives them. What they often find most meaningful and moving is writing their babies’ names on the stars and hanging them on the tree.
“Each year, more and more people attend the service as the message spreads about this special time to remember babies people have lost.”
The family craft afternoon will be held between 2pm-4pm on Saturday December 1 at Torbay Hospital’s Bayview restaurant and the Annual Baby Remembrance Service will take place at Torbay Hospital Chapel at 3pm on Sunday December 2.
Following the service, families will be able to have tea and mince pies in the Bayview restaurant, when people from Little Footprints will be on hand to offer support.
