THIS is how a new specialist school for youngsters looking for a career in healthcare could look.

Devon Studio School will be based on the Torbay Hospital annexe near the John Parkes unit in Newton Road.

Students will specialise in health, early years and social care, offering 300 14-to-19 year olds a new approach to learning.

The first of its kind in the South West and one of just 15 studio schools approved by the Government to open across the country next year, Devon Studio School is a partnership between South Devon College, Torbay Hospital and Torbay and Southern Devon Healthcare Trust.

Laurence Frewin, vice principal at the college for corporate services, told the mayor's forum, they expect it to be open by September, 2013.

He said the school was still in the design stage and would be a combination of existing buildings and new classrooms and science labs.

"We have received confirmation that the building can go ahead and been allocated a budget of £3.5million to proceed by the Department of Education. So we are moving quickly to get the design finalised and go for planning permission," he said.

He said at the same time work was under way at the £6.5million South West Energy Centre at Long Road, Paignton, which should be open next September. Mr Frewin said national companies were already showing a lot of interest in the centre designed to both promote and develop eco building and energy techniques, train installers, inform consumers and encourage new businesses.

"It's a great opportunity for Torbay and the South Devon area," he said. "It will be a very distinctive and we think it is something Torbay can be proud of."
