The
proposed EU Budget contains new funding for 'transition zones' which are areas
such as Devon and Torbay that have weak economies compared to the rest of the
EU. The funding, which could be worth hundreds of millions of pounds,
could be used to invest in infrastructure and new job opportunities.
Adrian
will meet with MEPs influential in the budget making process, such as George
Lyon and Ivailo Kalfin, along with Commissioner Lewandowski, who is overseeing
the EU budget process for the EU Commission.
Adrian
Sanders commented: "That Torbay and Devon will benefit from this new
funding is good news. We now need to make sure that not only is the fund
as large as possible for the local area but that decisions on how it is spent
are made locally and not by central Government ."
