Torbay have double reason to celebrate at Devon finals day
TORBAY Country Club ladies won two titles at Bowls Devon All-Finals Day at Plymouth Sir Francis Drake, where England junior Sophie Tolchard won the 2-Wood singles after beating Newton Abbot's Terri Kennard 15-10 after 19 ends.
Both players played well but Kings' Tolchard, winner of the 2009 Champion of Champions title, had the edge to put the finishing touches to a fabulous run that saw her beat Plymstock's former champion Mary Player 17-7 and international class bowlers Sue Harriott (17-14) and Barbara Bellamy (13-12) en route to the final.
Torbay skip Beryl Leach has a super rink in Val Davis, Yvonne Blackler and Jenny Corps, and the 2008 champions were to regain their county fours title after beating Tiverton West End's Chris Slade, Gill Callaghan, Margaret Sampson and Christina Woollacott 30-16 in the final.
A six saw them go 12-6 ahead and a four put them 16-10 up before a five on the 17th end to lead 27-15 put them close to victory.
A double celebration for the big band of supporters from the Torbay club came after Monica Harrison and Monica Hancock won the O70 pairs with victory over Madeira's Kate Andrews and Eileen Bagley 17-12.
The Benevolent Triples saw the title go to Honiton after Hannah Morfey, 16, teamed up with Joan Heard and Sue Evans to beat home favourites Lin Pill, Jean Cornwell and Kay Page 25-12.
In the semi-finals, Evans beat Brixham's Hazel Coombe, Jenny Moore and Wendy Barnard 19-14 and in the other semi-final Kaye Page beat Crediton's Jill Heal, Maggie Chaplin and Myra Grant 18-13.
