Torbay gets on the buses for free classic journeys
TORBAY'S PUBLIC TRANSPORT went back in time yesterday as hundreds of passengers were treated to free journeys on classic buses during the 4th annual Torbay Vintage Bus Running Day.
Over thirty buses played a part in the event – held at Torquay's Shedden Hill car park and sponsored by Stagecoach South West and Torbay Council - created to celebrate the bus industry's past. The oldest bus on show, an open topped 1934 AEC Regent 0661, was originally used as part of the Torquay Tramways replacement fleet and is one of only a handful of buses still operational worldwide that uses an 8.8 litre direct injection engine. Entered by Ron Greet, the 80 year old classic treated travellers to a free journey to Paignton's Broadsands throughout the day. Other free journeys offered on other locally-kept vintage buses included to: Torquay's Meadfoot beach; Babbacombe & St. Marychurch; Occombe Farm in Paignton and even as far as Kingswear.
"It's been a very popular event in previous years and it has been another success today," said one of the event organisers Terry Bennett, of Devon and Dorset Bus Group, "The South West is a good catchment area and we expect about 1500 visitors throughout the day from all over the region. Bus enthusiasts love the event and are always the first here in the morning with their cameras taking pictures!"
As well as a varied selection of vintage coaches, single-deck and double-deck buses, there were sales stands featuring classic cars and buses and food and refreshments. Kingsbridge bus station are hosting their own Vintage Bus Running Day on Saturday 15 September. For more information please visit www.tvagwot.org.uk.
