Torquay Westlands students celebrate as sixth form centre opens
STAFF and students at Westlands School are celebrating after the new sixth form centre was unveiled.
The facility was built as a joint project between the school and Torquay United football club and boasts state-of-the-art facilities.
Assistant headteacher Jacqui Vaughan, head of the sixth form centre, said: "We wanted to provide a space for our students that not only provided an environment conducive to learning but also a place they could take ownership of and make their own.
"We have managed to create this with our new centre.

"The students have embraced the change of not being in the main school building and are working exceptionally well with a renewed sense of motivation and enthusiasm."
Mrs Vaughan said the students were extensively involved in developing the facilities and their views and ideas were sought when equipping the centre.
Now in order to personalise their environment, students are seeking to design a mural style wall with personalised designs on the brickwork.
The updated and purpose-built buildings have been welcomed by the students themselves.
Student ambassador Ryan Etches said: "The new facilities are excellent making it easier for me to access information and make my learning more effective."
