Torquay coast path trees cut back to restore long lost coastal views

STUNNING, long lost views out across sections of Torquay's coastline are to be restored by a local conservation charity.

The cliffs along the South West Coast Path have over the years grown thick with trees and scrub, meaning many of the wonderful vistas have long since vanished.

Following discussions by Torbay Coast and Countryside Trust with local people and businesses, a number of key sections in Torquay have been identified for clearance work as part of the project. These areas include Hope's Nose, Ilsham Marine Drive, Petitor, Watcombe and Bishops walk.

A plan of clearance work will begin at these locations later this month, followed by the installation of new benches looking out across the viewpoints.

The largest viewing areas to be re-instated are at Hope's Nose and Ilsham Marine Drive, where a vigorous growth of sycamores has resulted in complete removal of these once wonderful views.

Trust estate manager Chris Lingard, said: "We will be carrying out a fairly extensive clearance programme; however some of the larger and best established trees will be left for their amenity and wildlife value.

"Following discussions with the local community, we are confident the end result of this project will create a more enjoyable experience for all."

Work will be carried out by contractors and rangers from Torbay Coast and Countryside Trust.
