Torquay girl is dancing for a good cause

A TORBAY girl is putting on her dancing shoes to kick up some cash for Save the Children.

Megan Brown, 11, is the organiser behind a danceathon being held at the Acorn Centre in Barton on Saturday.

Megan is calling upon children all across the Bay to join her in her five-hour danceathon, regardless of ability.

This is not her first self-organised event for the charity.

Mum Lindsay said: "It started a couple of years ago when she saw an advert on TV about children starving abroad and she decided she wanted to do something to help — she organised a bike ride and raised £376 for Save the Children.

"Because of that, I ended up on the committee of Save the Children."

This year, the charity is organising the Ultimate Dance Challenge, encouraging members of the public to come up with clever ways of using their dance moves to raise money for children in the UK.

"I came home from a Save the Children meeting and mentioned the campaign to Megan and asked her if she had any fundraising ideas," says Lindsay.

"She said 'give me one moment'. She came back with a Filofax and in it was this idea for a danceathon that she had been working on beforehand."

With a suitable dance floor located, in the shape of the Acorn Centre, the mother and daughter team are now eager to recruit as many dancers as possible.

"The idea is they dance for a bit, then have a rest then go back and dance some more," said Lindsay.

"They can do whatever they want to. We just need to make sure if there's someone on the dancefloor all the time.

"There will even be free transportation from Curledge Academy and back for those who need it."

DJ Pumpitlouder will be providing music.

And dancing on a rota basis, children will be given free juice or water to keep hydrated. Each child will receive a small prize at the end.
