Torquay launch event postponed after death of Devon cyclist in road race
The launch of a prestigious Devon cycle race – set to take place in May – has been postponed following the death of a young cyclist in a road-racing event in Gloucestershire.
Organisers of the Halfords Tour Series, which visits Torquay on May 28, said today's presentation will take place at a later date.
Junior Heffernan, 23, and from Yelverton, died as the result of an incident in the 41st Severn Bridge Road Race, near Olveston, on Sunday.
He was involved in a collision with a car on the third lap of a ten-lap race, which was immediately abandoned by organisers.
British Cycling president Brian Cookson said the tragedy, which befell the rider as he rode with his new team for the first time, will profoundly sadden everyone associated with cycling in this country.
A spokesman for the Tour Series extended his condolences and thoughts to the family, friends and colleagues of Mr Heffernan.
